SocialAgent vs Buffer
Buffer is the most approachable scheduler on the market and has been for a decade. Its strengths are simplicity and breadth of platforms. Its AI assistant is a convenience layer on top of that, not the centre of the product — and it does not let you bring your own model or key.
Where Buffer is stronger
- The cleanest, most beginner-friendly interface in the category
- Far more platforms than SocialAgent supports today
- A genuinely usable free plan and a long track record
- Good link-in-bio and basic analytics
Where SocialAgent is different
- You bring your own AI key and choose the model, so drafts are not routed through whatever is cheapest
- Approval is bound to a revision: editing an approved post sends it back to review rather than publishing unread
- A carousel builder that exports real PNG slides, respecting the 10-item Instagram API ceiling
- Drafts can cite retained website and RSS excerpts, re-checked before publishing
What each one does
| Capability | SocialAgent | Buffer |
|---|---|---|
| Bring your own AI API key (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google) | Required — we never resell credits | Not offered |
| Choose the model that writes your drafts | Per provider, per brand; recorded on every draft | Not exposed |
| Approval bound to a revision (editing revokes it) | Default behaviour on every draft | Approval on higher plans |
| Carousel builder with PNG slide export | Brand-styled slides, 3–10 of them, exported as assets | Not built in |
| Cited research sources retained and shown at review | Website and RSS excerpts stored per claim | No |
| Re-checks cited sources before publishing | Evidence older than 2h re-fetched; changes hold the post | No |
| Separate editable version per platform | Instagram, Threads and X, each with its own count | Yes |
| Content calendar across accounts | Week and month, filtered by status | Yes |
| Platforms supported | Instagram, Threads, X | Many more |
| EU data residency | Cloudflare Workers, D1 and R2 in the EU | Check their DPA |
| Entry price | Free plan, then €29/month or €236/year | Free plan, then paid per channel |
The SocialAgent column describes features that exist today. The Buffer column is written conservatively and can go out of date — competitor products change often, so verify anything that matters on their own site before you decide.
Every version, read before it publishes
This is the screen that differs most. A draft opens with all its platform versions, the publishing time in your timezone, the accounts it will post to, and the research excerpts behind any factual claim — and approving it is bound to that exact revision.
Which one should you pick?
Choose Buffer if you publish to many platforms and want the simplest possible scheduler. Choose SocialAgent if Instagram, Threads and X are where you actually publish, and you want AI drafting on your own key with a review step you cannot bypass.
