Social media character counter

Live character, word and line counts against every platform limit — plus what gets cut off in the feed.

Paste your text once and see it measured against every limit at the same time: the Instagram caption cap, the X post cap, the Threads cap, bio limits, and the point at which each feed truncates your text behind a "more" link.

The truncation preview is the useful part. Staying under the hard limit is easy; keeping the meaning inside the first visible line is what decides whether anyone reads the rest.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type your caption. Counts update as you type — nothing is sent anywhere.
  2. Check the truncation preview to see exactly where each feed cuts your text.
  3. Move anything essential above the cut. That includes the hook and any offer.
  4. Watch the line count too. Walls of text get scrolled past regardless of length.

Tips that actually change results

  • Instagram shows roughly 125 characters before "more". Write the first sentence as if it is the whole post.
  • X counts most emoji as two characters and shortens every link to 23 characters regardless of its real length.
  • Line breaks cost you nothing in character count and buy a lot of readability.
  • If your text is within 10 characters of a limit, cut a word. Platforms occasionally count differently than you expect.
FAQ

Questions about this tool

What are the current character limits?

Instagram captions allow 2,200 characters and about 30 hashtags; X allows 280 characters on a standard account; Threads allows 500 characters. Bios: Instagram 150, X 160, Threads 255. This tool measures your text against all of them at once.

How many characters show before Instagram truncates a caption?

Roughly 125 characters, depending on the device and whether your first line wraps. The tool marks the cut so you can see what a reader sees before tapping "more".

Do emoji count as one character?

Not always. Many emoji are two UTF-16 units and count as two characters on X, and skin-tone or family emoji can count for several. The counter uses the same unit counting the platforms use.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. The counter runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you paste leaves the page.
