Why you should bring your own AI key

Bundled AI credits hide the model, the cost and the data path. Bringing your own OpenAI, Anthropic or Google key fixes all three. Here is what changes.

Nearly every social media tool now has an "AI" button. Almost all of them work the same way: the vendor holds an API key, marks up the tokens, and gives you a monthly credit allowance. It is a reasonable business model. It is a bad deal for anyone who cares about the output.

Bringing your own key — BYOK — means you paste your own OpenAI, Anthropic or Google AI key into the tool, and the tool calls the provider as you. Three things change.

1. You choose the model, and you can change it

When credits are bundled, the vendor picks the model, and they are structurally motivated to pick a cheap one. You cannot tell which model wrote your draft, and you cannot tell when it changes underneath you. A post that read well in March reads generic in June, and there is nothing to inspect.

With your own key you pick the model per brand and per draft, and you can put a frontier model on the writing that matters and a cheap one on the routine batch. When a better model ships, you switch that day rather than waiting for the vendor's roadmap.

2. You see the real cost

Bundled credits are deliberately hard to price. "200 AI credits" is not a unit of anything — you cannot tell whether a caption costs one credit or four until you run out.

With your own key, generation cost appears on your provider bill in tokens, at the provider's list price, with no markup. For most individual creators the honest number is startling: a month of daily drafting is usually a rounding error next to the subscription itself.

3. The data path is short and inspectable

With bundled AI, your brand voice, unpublished drafts and research notes go to the vendor, who then sends them to a model provider under their own account and their own terms. You are trusting two retention policies and one contract you did not sign.

With your own key, the content goes to the provider you already chose, under the terms you already accepted, on an account whose retention settings and data-processing agreement you control. If your provider account excludes your data from training, that exclusion actually applies.

What BYOK costs you

It would be dishonest to present this as free. BYOK has real friction:

  • You have to create a provider account and generate a key, which is a genuine extra step at signup.
  • You are responsible for your own rate limits and spending caps.
  • If your key is revoked or your balance runs out, generation stops until you fix it.
  • You need somewhere safe for the key to live — which means the tool has to encrypt it properly at rest and never show it back to you in full.

That last point is the one to interrogate before you paste a key anywhere. Ask where the key is stored, whether it is encrypted at rest, whether it is ever logged, and whether the tool can display it again. "Yes, here is your key" is a failing answer.

How SocialAgent handles it

SocialAgent is BYOK-only. You connect OpenAI, Anthropic or Google AI, pick a model per provider, and every draft records which provider and model produced it — so when a batch reads flat you can see what wrote it. Keys are encrypted at rest, never returned to the browser after saving, and used only to call the provider you selected.

We never resell AI credits, which also means we have no incentive to route your drafts through the cheapest model available.
