How to schedule Instagram carousels

Planning, building and scheduling Instagram carousels: the account requirement, the 10-item API ceiling, and the delay that breaks third-party publishing.

Carousels remain the most reliable format on Instagram for anything that needs more than one sentence: a teardown, a process, a list, a before-and-after. They are also the format most likely to fail when scheduled through a third-party tool, for reasons that have nothing to do with the tool.

Here is the whole path, and the three places it breaks.

Before anything: your account type

Instagram only permits third-party publishing from a Professional account — Business or Creator. A personal account cannot be published to by any scheduling tool, including this one. Converting is free and takes about a minute in Instagram settings, and you can convert back.

Step 1 — Write the outline before you design anything

A carousel is a sequence, and sequences fail structurally, not visually. Write the slide list as plain text first:

  1. Slide 1 is the hook and nothing else. If it needs a second sentence, the hook is not ready.
  2. Slides 2 to n are one idea each. One idea per slide, phrased as a statement, not a heading.
  3. The last slide asks for one action: save it, follow, or read something specific.

Six to eight slides is the range that gets finished. Beyond about ten, completion drops sharply and the algorithmic benefit of a long carousel disappears with it.

Step 2 — Respect the ten-item API ceiling

This is the constraint that catches people. The Instagram app lets you post up to 20 items in a carousel. The Content Publishing API — which every scheduling tool uses — allows 10. A 12-slide carousel simply cannot be scheduled; it has to be posted by hand.

Plan for a maximum of ten slides if you intend to schedule. In practice, capping yourself at eight makes for better carousels anyway.

Step 3 — Export real images, not a live template

Instagram needs actual image files. Any tool that renders slides from a template has to rasterise them before it can publish, and a "carousel" that exists only as editable text is not publishable.

Export at 1080 × 1350 (4:5) for the most feed height, or 1080 × 1080 if your slides are genuinely square. Keep text well inside the frame: Instagram crops carousel thumbnails differently across surfaces, and text near the edge gets clipped in the grid.

Step 4 — Understand the processing delay

Publishing a carousel through the API is a three-part operation: upload each image as an item container, wait for Instagram to finish processing every one, then create the carousel container and publish it. Processing is not instant, and it can fail per item.

This matters for scheduling because a carousel scheduled for 09:00 does not start uploading at 09:00 and appear at 09:00. A well-behaved tool begins early, polls until every item reports ready, and only then publishes. A badly-behaved one fires once and reports success whether or not the post exists.

Step 5 — Write the caption for the truncated view

Carousel captions get about 125 characters before Instagram collapses them. Since slide 1 already carries the hook, use the visible caption line for the promise — what the reader gets by swiping — and put the detail below the fold.

End with the action from your last slide, phrased the same way. Consistency between the final slide and the caption measurably improves saves.

How SocialAgent does it

Carousels in SocialAgent start as text: one heading and one body per slide, three to ten slides. Slides are generated as artwork in your brand palette and typography, export as PNGs into your workspace, and publishing is blocked until the exported slides exist — so there is no path where a carousel publishes as a stub.

At publish time each image goes up as its own container, processing is polled per item, and anything ambiguous is held for you rather than retried blindly. If your draft cites a research source and that source changed since generation, the post is held too.
