Every so often someone asks why a scheduling tool cannot just post to their personal Instagram account. The answer is not a limitation of the tool. Instagram does not offer an API for it.
What the API requires
Instagram's Content Publishing API — the only sanctioned route for a third party to create a post — works with Professional accounts, meaning Business or Creator. A personal account has no publishing endpoint at all.
This also constrains what can be scheduled at all: single images, carousels of up to 10 items, and Reels. Stories publishing is available to Business accounts through the API, and some formats remain app-only.
How to convert
- Open Instagram, go to Settings and privacy.
- Find Account type and tools, then Switch to professional account.
- Pick Creator or Business. Creator suits individuals and personal brands; Business suits companies and shops, and unlocks contact buttons and shopping features.
- Choose a category. It is visible on your profile and you can change it later.
It is free, takes about a minute, and you can switch back to personal whenever you like.
What you gain
- Third-party scheduling and publishing.
- Insights: reach, impressions, saves, shares, follower activity by hour and day.
- Contact buttons, category label, and — on Business accounts — shopping features.
What you give up
- Licensed music on some formats. Business accounts have a smaller commercial music library. Creator accounts keep much more of it, which is why most individuals should choose Creator.
- The "private account" toggle. Professional accounts are public. If your account must be private, publishing via API is not available to you.
After converting: what still limits you
| Constraint | Value |
|---|---|
| Carousel items via API | 10 (the app allows 20) |
| Caption length | 2,200 characters |
| Hashtags per post | 30 |
| API publishing rate limit | ~50 published posts per 24 hours |
| Image processing | Each carousel item is processed before publishing |
The 50-posts-per-day ceiling is generous for a single brand and worth knowing if you run many accounts from one workspace — SocialAgent's own monthly allowances (60 on Free, 150 on Pro) will normally bind first.
Connecting it once
In SocialAgent you authorize Instagram through the official Meta OAuth flow — no password is ever entered into the app, and tokens are encrypted at rest. Long-lived tokens are refreshed before they expire; if authorization is revoked on Instagram's side, the connection is marked as needing reconnection and affected posts are held rather than failed silently.
